Since prehistoric times, it has been a source of salt and naptha. Archaeological finds here include the Dead Sea Scrolls and towns reputed to be Sodom and Gomorrah. Because of its location on the often dangerous Israel-West Bank border, however, its banks are mostly deserted, and there are few visitors other than archaeologists and tour groups.
