Puerto Rico is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The island is located about 1,000 miles off the coast of Florida, and is part of the West Indies, a string of islands.
As a volcanic island the size of Connecticut, mountains cover most of Puerto Rico, particularly down the middle of the island. However, the north side of the island has tropical rainforests with lush vegetation and unique wildlife, such as the singing tree frog known as the Coqui. The climate of Puerto Rico is tropical with an ocean breeze wafting through the villages. The average temperature in Puerto Rico ranges from 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit. An annual hurricane season can be a concern for residents, as the storms may cause significant property damage.
