Tunisia is located in northern Africa, east of Algeria and northwest of Libya. The northern and eastern parts of Tunisia border the Mediterranean Sea and are directly south of Sardinia in Italy.
The southern part of Tunisia is arid and includes the northern edges of the Sahara Desert. The Atlas Mountains cover parts of northwestern Tunisia and continue southwest into Algeria and Morocco. The capital of Tunisia, Tunis, is located on the Mediterranean coastline in the north.
Tunisia is a small country compared to its neighbors. It has a land area of 63,170 square miles, making it only slightly larger than the state of Georgia. The country has a population of about 10 million, with a fifth of the population living in the capital city.
