What Is the Tri-State Area?

A tri-state area is a metropolitan area that occupies sections of three different states. Although the New York metropolitan area is the most well known tri-state area, there are many tri-state areas around the country; which is being referenced at any given time depends on the metropolitan area in question.

The New York tri-state area is comprised of parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Other large tri-state areas include the metropolitan areas around Chicago, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Memphis. Parts of Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana form the tri-state area of Chicago. Parts of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky form the Cincinnati tri-state area, while the Pittsburgh tri-state area is formed by parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. Memphis encompasses parts of Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.
