Before traveling to Cancun, Mexico, or anywhere else in the country, travelers should check the website of the United States Department of State for travel advisories. As of July 2015, there are no advisories in effect for traveling to Cancun.
While there are no advisories for traveling to Cancun, the U.S. State Department warns citizens of other possible threats while traveling to parts of Mexico. Most of these threats include organized criminal factions within the country, and kidnapping, carjacking and robbery as some of the most frequent actions committed against American citizens. However, the Mexican government puts a great deal of resources into protecting tourist areas, such as Cancun, from the violence that other parts of the country experience.
