U.S. Route 95, U.S. Route 395 and California State Route 58 appear on maps of the Mojave Desert. Interstate 15 and Interstate 40 also traverse the Mojave Desert. Historic Route 66 crosses the Mojave Desert but is mostly superseded by the Interstate Highway System.
The Santa Fe and the Southern Pacific railroad systems appear on many Mojave Desert maps. The Mojave Desert spans approximately 54,000 square miles across southern California, southern Nevada, southwest Utah and western Arizona. The San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountain ranges delineate its western border. However, the eastern border of the desert is not clearly defined.
