How Do You Get a Tour of the Carolands Mansion?

In order to tour the Carolands Mansion, one must submit an application via the Carolands Foundation website. The foundation uses a lottery system due to the large number of tour requests and the limited guest capacity. Names are selected at random from the pool of applicants.

Applicants may apply for more than one date. Tours are complimentary and are held on Wednesdays. Applications are limited to one to two visitors per application request, and guests are limited to one visit per year.

Submitting an application does not guarantee a reservation. Applicants selected via the lottery system will be notified by email within five business days of the application deadline. A printed reservation and photo ID must be presented upon arrival. Reservations are not transferable. Cancellations require 48 hours notice; without this notice, reservations are counted as a visit.

The tour may take as long as two hours, may include as many as 100 steps, and requires a considerable amount of standing. Guests are asked to wear flat shoes.

There are no self-guided or audio tours. Photography is permitted outside the chateau for personal use only; photography is not allowed inside the chateau.

The Carolands Foundation requests that applicants be patient, as it can take several months to secure a reservation.
