Other New York City museums listed in top 10 lists include the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, the New York Transit Museum and the New York Historical Society.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art contains approximately two million pieces from many civilizations and is the most visited art museum in the United States. The Museum of Modern Art houses many contemporary and unique pieces by modern artists.
The American Museum of Natural History hosts a large collection of dinosaur fossils in addition to other biology and ecology exhibits. The Guggenheim Museum, in a building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, contains many pieces by classic artists such as Picasso and Monet.
The Intrepid Museum, located on a retired aircraft carrier, houses several historic aircraft and other vehicles of war. The Tenement Museum highlights the history of New York City in the late 19th century when a major European wave of immigration arrived.
