Tips for finding the cheapest flights include booking early, being flexible with dates and times of flights, flying from regional airports and using a flight comparison site such as Kayak.com or SkyScanner.com to compare flights across different airlines and read advice about the likelihood of imminent price changes. Flying midweek can often be cheaper than flying at weekends and traveling with carry-on baggage can save money on flights with budget airlines that charge for checked baggage.
To find the cheapest flights on Kayak.com, enter the trip's departure and destination cities in the flight search box, check Include Nearby Airports and click Show Flexible Dates to include flights departing up to three days on either side of your planned trip date. Click All beside Compare Vs. Kayak to compare prices across a range of alternative comparison flights, including Expedia.com and Travelocity.com, and click Search. Kayak's search results include a matrix highlighting the cheapest flights in dark green and the most expensive in dark pink. Click on the cheapest price to view the deal. Read the advice in the top left corner about the best time to buy, and set up a price alert to receive warnings if the price is about to change.
SkyScanner offers a similar flight search tool but does not display flights for alternative dates. Click the dates at the top of the search results page to move the departure dates forward or backward and view flights departing on the new dates.
