Pittsburgh was founded in 1758 as a frontier fort settlement and incorporated as a city in 1816. The city was named for Sir William Pitt. From 1890-1911 the city was spelled Pittsburg in accordance with rules set by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. In 1991, it was restored to its original spelling.
