Antarctica is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. The International Hydrographic Organization created the Southern Ocean from parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans in 2000. The Southern Ocean is the fourth largest ocean in the world, surpassing the Arctic Ocean.

The Southern Ocean travels north about 60 miles from Antarctica's coastline to 60 degrees south latitude. It comprises a surface area of about 7.8 million square miles and reaches a maximum depth of 23,737 feet below sea level in the South Sandwich Trench. This ocean has a temperature that ranges from 28 degrees Fahrenheit to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The Southern Ocean has the world's largest ocean current, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.
