Ellijay boasts dozens of outdoor attractions such as the Tumbling Waters and Songbird hiking trails as well as the Big Rock and Oak Ridge nature trails. The Songbird hiking trail takes visitors along the Little Conasauga River for a close look at the beaver dams. The Big Rock nature trail lies in Fort Mountain State Park, taking hikers past waterfalls to the Top of the Mountain trail that leads up Fort Mountain.
Both the Oak Ridge and Tumbling Waters trails are located at Carters Lake. The former is an easy trail that runs along a ravine and the lakeshore, offering hikers a good view of the lake and surrounding area. The latter follows the Tumbling Waters creek, which also doubles as a historical landmark.
