Visitors to the Vatican can enter St. Peter's Basilica for free as of June 2015. The enormous church features several works of art, including Michelangelo's "Pietà" and the ornate baldacchino by the artist Bernini. When the underground grotto is open, visitors can go downstairs to view the burial locations of several past popes.
The dome of St. Peter's is also open to visitors. Part of the way to the top, ticket holders can enter the upper levels of the basilica for a closer look at the interior of the dome. At the top of the dome, visitors can look out over Rome.
The Vatican Museums, which require an entrance fee, include a variety of religious and non-religious art. The Sistine Chapel is a popular exhibit and features its famous ceiling art by Michelangelo.
To take a tour of the Vatican gardens, visitors must book a guided tour in advance. Most tours last approximately two hours. Tickets are available for purchase online at the Vatican Museum's website.Learn more about Geography
