What Is Texas Best Known For?

Texas is America's second-largest state in both size and population, with an area of 268,820 square miles and a population of 26.45 million as of 2013. It was the site of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and is known for its barbecue cuisine, football and hot climate.

President Kennedy was shot in Dallas in 1963. Other historical events that took place in the state include the battle at the Alamo, where Texans such as David Crockett and Jim Bowie fought and lost against the Mexican army in their battle for independence. Texas is often referred to as the Lone Star State thanks to its past as an independent republic. It joined the United States in 1845.
