The Metro Vancouver Region, formerly known as Greater Vancouver Regional District, includes the city of Surrey amongst its federation of 21 municipalities. Surrey, with a population of over 468,00 as of 2015, is the second largest of the municipalities after the City of Vancouver.
Surrey is situated in the south of the Metro Vancouver Region, bordered by the Corporation of Delta to the west, the Township of Langley to the east, and the U.S.state of Washington to the south. The Fraser River runs along its entire northern border, and the City of White Rock sits along its southwest coastline. Surrey comprises six town centers: Fleetwood, Whalley, Guildford, Newton, Cloverdale and South Surrey.
