From the Lookout Mountain attraction known as Rock City, it has been said one can see seven states: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. That claim has not been substantiated. On clear days, one can definitely see mountains near Knoxville, Tenn., about 100 miles away.
The claim “See 7 States” is associated with a particular lookout point in Rock City called Lovers Leap. Skeptics claim the curvature of the earth obscures anything in Kentucky, South Carolina or Virginia, even with a powerful telescope. Located in Lookout Mountain, Ga., near Chattanooga, Tenn., Rock City was made famous by signs on barn roofs saying “See Rock City.” Clark Byers painted 900 signs in 19 states from 1935 to 1969.
