Stater Brothers markets are located throughout six counties in southern California, including Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, Orange County, San Diego County and Kern County. In total, the company operates 168 stores.
The company was founded in 1936 by two brothers who owned a small grocery in Yucaipa, California, although the first official Stater Brothers supermarket did not open for another 12 years. Until that time, the company owned five small groceries.
In 1960, Stater Brothers established its own construction company in order to have total control of the design and construction of new stores. According to Stater Brothers, 1980 saw the company's biggest expansion in a single year to date, with 12 new supermarkets opening that year. In 1986, Stater Brothers was briefly acquired by La Cadena Investments, but the company was re-privatized in 1987. In 2001, Grocery Headquarters magazine named the company "Supermarket Retailer of the Year." Since then, Stater Brothers has gone on to win numerous other awards.
As of 2015, the company headquarters is located in San Bernardino, California and boasts 18,000 employees. In addition to its San Bernardino headquarters, the company also operates several distribution centers and a support center.
