The city of Milwaukee rests in southeastern Wisconsin, about 90 miles north of Chicago. The state is bordered by Minnesota to the west, Iowa to the southwest, Illinois to the south, Indiana to the southeast, Lake Michigan to the east and Michigan to the northeast.
On May 26, 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state admitted to the Union. With roughly 5.7 million residents and a land area of more than 65,000 square miles, as of 2014, Wisconsin ranks 20th and 23rd in population and size, respectively, among the other states. The state capital is located in the south-central city of Madison, home to the University of Wisconsin. Milwaukee is the largest city in the state.
