The population of this city is approximately 843,393 as of 2013. The city became the state capital of Indiana in 1820. In 1821, the plan was that the city consist of just 1 square mile with streets in all four directions, including the diagonal streets of Virginia Avenue, Indiana Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue and Kentucky Avenue.
