Detroit is located in Michigan. The Great Lake State consists of upper and lower peninsulas that occupy more than 56,000 square miles of land in the Midwest.
Michigan's land borders include Canada to the east and north, Ohio and Indiana to the south and Wisconsin to the west. The state is also the only one that borders four of the five Great Lakes. Michigan became the 25th state admitted to the Union in 1837. The state motto is "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." While the capital is in the central city of Lansing, Detroit boasts the largest population in the state.
