The state of North Carolina bears the abbreviation "NC." The Tar Heel State was the 12th state admitted to the Union, achieving statehood on Nov. 21, 1789.
North Carolina occupies nearly 54,000 square miles and is bordered by Virginia to the north, Tennessee to the west, Georgia and South Carolina to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The largest city is Charlotte. The central city of Raleigh is the state capital.
The state's economy is largely supported by the tobacco, furniture and textile industries. Major attractions include the Blue Ridge National Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains and the Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores.
