Des Moines is the largest city in Iowa, as well as the state capital. Iowa became a territory of the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. American settlers first moved to Iowa in 1833. Iowa was granted statehood on December 28, 1846, becoming the 29th state in the union.
