Some sports that Ukrainian girls play include artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, tennis, basketball and soccer. Ukrainian girls also participate in handball, weight-lifting and professional ballroom dancing.
Ukraine is home to some of the best female gymnasts in the world. They sent a full team of artistic gymnasts to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where they placed 11th in qualifications. Rhythmic gymnastics is the most popular sport in the Ukraine among both females and males, and Ukrainian girls have a great history of success in the sport at the Olympic Games.
The national women's handball team also takes part in international competitions, first appearing in the Olympic Games in 2004. The women's Ukrainian soccer team also competes against the world's best teams. In the 2015 World Cup, they lost in the UEFA playoff semi-finals. Furthermore, there are several girls making a name for themselves on the WTA tour, the women's pro tennis circuit. Among them is Elina Svitlova, ranked number 17 in the world, as of July 2015.
Ukrainian high schools have a sports curriculum in which girls can participate in various sports. There are also special schools for those wishing to concentrate on a specific sport or to train for the Olympics in their respective sports.
