Spain is located in southwestern Europe. Along with Portugal, it occupies the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered on the east by the Mediterranean Sea. It is separated from the continent of Africa by the Strait of Gibraltar.
The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow body of water about 7 nautical miles wide connecting the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. Because of its proximity to Africa, Spain was a refuge for Muslims driven from Northern Africa during the Crusades. The Moorish architecture erected by Islamic refugees is still prevalent throughout Spain as of 2014. Spain is a member of the European Union and one of the most visited countries in Europe.
