The smallest Central American nation is El Salvador. It has an area of approximately 13,000 square miles. El Salvador borders the Pacific Ocean to the south, Honduras to the north and Guatemala to the west.

El Salvador gained its independence from the Central American Federation in 1839. San Salvador is the capital city of El Salvador, and also the country's largest city. The official language spoken by most inhabitants is Central American Spanish. The dominant religion is Christianity. El Salvador has the third-largest economy in Central America. It exports electricity, chemicals, textiles, shrimp, sugar and coffee. The country is known for its jungles, volcanoes, beaches and ancient Maya sites.
