Founded in 1872 as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Shriners International developed as a branch of the Freemasons. The organization has over 350,000 members and 195 chapters around the world. Its mission is to provide assistance to children and families in need.

The organization also establishes and provides funding for Shriners Hospitals for Children in 20 locations throughout the United States. These hospitals specialize in orthopedics, burn recovery, the treatment of spinal cord injuries, and cleft lips and palates.
