Some popular activities in San Luis Obispo are beach visits, scenic hikes, wine tasting and golf. The city is also home to a popular performing arts center and drive-in theater.
Some of the beaches in the area are Montaña de Oro, Avila Beach, Guadalupe Dunes, Point Sal, San Simeon, Oceano Dunes and Morro Bay. The beaches between Pismo Beach and San Simeon are generally the most accessible for surfing.
Some places that are great for scenic hikes are Bishop Peak, the Valencia Peak trail, El Chorro Regional Park, the Reservoir Canyon trail and Cuesta Canyon County Park.
San Luis Obispo also has two unique and unusual cultural sights. Motel Inn was the first motel in the world, and its remains can be seen along Highway 101. Bubblegum Alley consists of two walls covered in chewed gum placed by past visitors, and new visitors are free to continue adding to the wall. A few mainstream cultural sights include the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, Museum of Art, History Center and Museum and Dallidet Adobe and Garden.
The Performing Arts Center is a major regional draw for concerts and theater performances. The Sunset Drive-In theater offers current movies in an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1950s.
