In compiling its ranking of the 10 safest places in Florida, Movoto Real Estate studied 2012 statistics reported by law-enforcement agencies in cities with populations of 5,000 or more. Parkland, home to 24,737 people that year, topped Movoto's list with just 255 crimes. Only 20 of the incidents were violent crimes, 15 assaults, four robberies and one rape. The city's 235 property crimes in 2012 included 52 burglaries, 12 motor-vehicle thefts and 171 other thefts.

Movoto gave Parkland a crime index of 76, meaning the community was safer than 76 percent of U.S. cities in 2012. There were 10.31 crimes per 1,000 residents. The violent crime rate of 0.81 per 1,000 people was significantly lower than the U.S. average of 3.9. About 9.5 per 1,000 residents were victims of property crimes, far fewer than the 28.6 per 1,000 in cities nationwide.

Parkland, part of the Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area, is 37 miles north of Miami and 3 miles northeast of Coral Springs. It is one of Florida's fastest-growing cities.
