Russia is in both Europe and Asia, spanning the continental divide marked by the Ural Mountains. European Russia is west of the Ural Mountains, while Asian Russia is to the east. Although most of Russia is in Asia, some authorities only attribute countries to one continent, putting Russia in Europe.
Russia covers about 17 million miles, and approximately 75 percent of Russian territory is in Asia. Although three-quarters of Russia is in Asia, over three-quarters of the Russian population lives in the European regions of Russia. Siberia is the predominant region in Asian Russia, comprising 77 percent of Russia's total land.
