The rural-urban fringe is the transitional area where urban and rural areas mix, resulting in multiple zoning and land types being close together. In this type of area, airports, water treatment plants and larger tracts of land can be found. These large land areas can also be prime locations for apartments and small farms consisting of just a few acres.
Other characteristics of these areas are the lower land prices and the sizes of the homes. Many homes in these areas belong to the middle class who need to commute to work in the city but cannot afford the more expensive prices of living in or just outside the city. The land values here can be lower for numerous reasons, including proximity to factories, interstates and health care facilities.
