Spirit Airlines allows every passenger to bring one personal item, such as a purse or small backpack, at no charge. Carry-on and checked bags incur charges on both domestic and international flights. Bags must not exceed the specified maximum dimensions, and fees are applicable for overweight and oversized baggage.
The personal item can have a maximum dimension of 16 by 14 by 12 inches, including wheels and handle. One carry-on bag, with a maximum dimension of 22 by 18 by 10 inches, including wheels and handles, is allowed per passenger for a fee. Diaper bags and outer garments, labeled as assistive devices can be carried free of charge.
The maximum size and weight permitted for checked in baggage is 62 linear inches and 40 pounds. Bags beyond these limits incur a fee that varies depending on the excess size and weight. Spirit Airlines does not permit bags above 99 pounds and 80 linear inches.
Sports equipments such as surfboards and bicycles are permissible as checked in baggage for a handling fee that varies depending on their handling requirements, size and fragility. Baggage fees are payable while booking or during check in.
Customers participating in the $9 Fare Club can avail of baggage fee discounts as of 2015. Also, from December 1 to January 10, baggage weight is restricted to 50 pounds on international flights. Spirit Airlines changes baggage fees and rules frequently.
