The state of Rhode Island is situated in the southern New England region of the United States. Neighboring Rhode Island are Massachusetts to the north and east, Connecticut to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.
While the Ocean State is smallest in geographical size - just over 1,000 square miles - it trails only New Jersey in population density. The largest city and the state capital, Providence, rests in the state's northeast region. A major player in jewelry manufacturing, the highly industrialized state's main industries are electronics, metal and plastic products, and boat and ship construction. The state also generates more than $1 billion annually in tourism.
