The Republic of Cyprus is a small island that is situated in the Eastern Mediterranean sea. It is 75 miles west of the eastern Syrian coast and 71 miles south of Turkey, with other countries such Israel, Egypt and Greece sharing distant borders with it as well.
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea when compared to Sicily and Sardinia, with a total land mass of 5,687 square miles. Because of its strategic crossroad location between Africa, Asia and Europe, it has been the target of many civilizations who have wanted to conquer it. The island nation is divided into two parts, with the Turkish Cypriots controlling the north, and the Greek Cypriots inhabiting the south.
