To register a SmarTrip card, visit WMATA's website, log into your SmarTrip account and click on Add SmarTrip Card. Users who do not have a SmarTrip account can sign up for one on the Create Account page of the WMATA website. Alternatively, users can register cards by mail or fax.
From WMATA's home page, navigate to the SmarTrip page, and click on the arrow next to SmarTrip, where it is listed under Fares. Options include Manage Your Account, which allows you to log in and register your SmarTrip card, and Create an Account, which allows you to sign up for a new SmarTrip account. There is also a link to the SmarTrip Questions and Answers page, which is where the SmarTrip Card Registration section contains information about how to register a SmarTrip card.
Cards purchased online through WMATA are automatically registered and linked to your SmarTrip account unless you choose to opt out of this during the purchase. SmarTrip cards purchased from other retailers or station dispensers are not registered. Registering a card protects the balance if the card is lost, stolen, damaged or stops working. A SmarTrip account allows you to check and reload your card balance and monitor your usage. You can also sign up for Auto Reload, which enables you to set a predefined dollar value to automatically add to your registered card from your credit card whenever it reaches a minimum threshold.
