Tickets can only be purchased online through Megabus.com with a credit or debit card, as of April 2015. Riders can make reservations and ticket purchases from the website, or by using the company's free downloadable app.
Megabus.com ticket prices are set on an escalating scale, becoming more expensive as the departure date approaches. Every bus route has at least one $1 ticket available for each trip. Securing the $1 fair generally requires purchasing it significantly in advance. Preferential seating, such as seats with a table or unobstructed front view from the upper deck, can be purchased for an additional fee, depending on availability. All seating locations have free Wi-Fi access and an electrical outlet.
Ticket changes can be made for a fee, but must be completed 24 hours in advance of the scheduled departure time. General and reserved seat tickets are not guaranteed, and all passengers need to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure or risk forfeiting their ticket, or reserved seat location.
Typically, the bus driver accepts the electronic tickets by viewing them on a passenger's mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet. However, knowing the confirmation code is the only requirement for boarding, with no personal identification necessary. Megabus has no terminals or storefront locations. All itinerary information, including departure and arrival times, bus stop locations and baggage requirements are available through the purchase portals.
