As of 2014, the most populous county in West Virginia was Kanawha County, with a population of 190,223. Kanawha County is located in the south central region of the state. It is home to the capital city of Charleston.
The next most populous county in West Virginia is Berkeley County, with a population of 110,497. Berkeley County is found in the extreme northeast of West Virginia and is bordered by Morgan County to the west and Jefferson County to the east. It is bordered by Maryland to the north and Virginia to the south. Despite its population, Berkeley County is only 321.14 square miles in area.
Monongalia County follows with a population of 103,463. It is found in the northern part of the state and borders Wetzel, Marion, Taylor and Preston Counties as well as the state of Pennsylvania.
