As of 2015, popular tourist destinations in Southern California cities include Disneyland in Anaheim, Knott's Berry Farm in neighboring Buena Park, the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica and Mission Bay in San Diego. Disneyland is the original Disney park, conceived and built by Walt Disney. This is where Mickey Mouse first welcomed the world, and where characters from Disney pictures still come to life. The venue has continually expanded, even adding a second park, the Disney California Adventure Park.
Knott's Berry Farm was once a berry farm that ran the very successful Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant on the side. That restaurant is still there, along with other eateries, thrilling and tame rides and the Knott's Berry Farm Hotel. The Snoopy-themed property is next to the Knott's Soak City Water Park.
The Santa Monica Pier dates back to 1909 and quickly became a favored fishing spot. People still fish from the pier, but it now holds an amusement park, complete with Ferris wheel and vintage carousel, several restaurants, a trapeze school and aquarium. It is a magnet for surfers, beach lovers and people watchers.
San Diego's Mission Bay is a prime beach area that is also home to Sea World San Diego, the San Diego Zoo, the USS Midway Museum and Legoland California. Accommodation choices include posh hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds for tents and/or RVs.
