On the shores of Lake Lure is Chimney Rock State Park and Hickory Nut Gorge, which offers rock climbing and zip line activities. Scenes from the 1992 film "Last of the Mohicans" were shot at Hickory Nut Gorge and its 104-foot waterfall, Hickory Nut Falls.
Lake James is nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina near the city of Marion. This large reservoir covers 10.2 square miles and provides opportunities for camping, fishing, swimming and jet skiing. The Lake James Pub and Grill provides a relaxed dining atmosphere. The nearby South Creek Vineyards & Winery offers mountain vistas from the patios of a renovated 100 year old farmhouse.
Lake Santeelah is surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest. This 128-acre lake offers fishing opportunities for trout, muskie, crappie and bass. The surrounding forest land provides camping, picnicking and boating facilities.
