The first Catholic mass in America occurred shortly after Spanish soldiers arrived in August 1559. In 1559, Don Tristan de Luna y Arellano led the first settlement of the region and also the first permanent European settlement in what would become the United States. The settlement predated Jamestown but was debilitated by a hurricane just a few weeks after its establishment, causing the settlers to abandon the site in under three years.

Santa Rosa and Pensacola Beach are bordered to the south by the Gulf of Mexico and to the north by Santa Rosa Sound and Pensacola Bay. Its exact location is 30°20?00?N 87°08?15?W. Pensacola Beach belongs to the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area includes all of Escambia County and Santa Rosa counties.

The area is home to the second-oldest shipwreck in the country. The shipwreck of Emmanuel Point II was discovered in 2007 and dates back to Don Tristan de Luna’s expedition.
