Outdoor attractions in Venice, Florida include Caspersen Beach, the Venice Fishing Pier, Jelks Preserve and horseback riding at Deer Prairie Creek. Caspersen Beach is known for its abundance of shells and prehistoric shark teeth. The best time to go is after a storm, when things have been "stirred up." Boardwalk style walkovers lead across the dunes and marshy areas down to the water's edge.Continue Reading
No fishing license is needed to fish at the Venice Fishing Pier. A bait shop, hard to miss because of its neon-bright green, blue and pink paint, is right at the entrance. Rod and reel rentals are also available. The pier stretches 700 feet from shore and is open around the clock. Large flounder and mackerel are regularly caught at the pier, and night fishing adds sharks to that list.
Jelks Preserve is 614 acres of natural land fronting the Myakka River. More than 8 miles of trails run through the park, including the 3.3-mile outer loop trail. Trails are unpaved but accessible to most, though they sometimes flood during heavy rains. Bird- and nature-watching is popular here, as is just sitting in a sunny spot just watching the river.
Explore the Deer Prairie Creek Preserve from the back of a horse. Riders of all skill levels are welcome, as are children that are at least 8 years old. The shortest rides are an hour, and all trail rides have a professional guide. Horseback riding is available form October through May.Learn more about Geography
