Full Answer

The Oakland Zoo was established in 1922 by Henry A. Snow. The first location was in downtown Oakland, and over the next several years, the zoo changed locations many times, finally landing at Durant Park in 1939. In 1948, California purchased the land under the direction of chairman Joseph R. Knowland, and in 1950, the name of the park was changed to Joseph Knowland State Arboretum and Park. As of 2014, Oakland Zoo is still sometimes referred to as Knowland Zoo. The zoo features an African Savannah area, a rain forest and a wildlife theater, among many other attractions.
