The country of Nigeria is located in West Africa. The southern part of the country borders the Gulf of Guinea, which opens up to the Atlantic Ocean. Nigeria also borders the African nations of Benin, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
Nigeria has an area of 356,667 square miles. As of 2013, it was the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous in the world with an estimated population of 174,507,539. In 2014, Nigeria passed South Africa as the largest economy in Africa with a GDP of over $500 billion. The capital city of Abuja is located in the central part of the country, while Lagos, the nation's largest city, is in a coastal area in the southwestern corner of the country.
