Find Nicaragua directly north of Costa Rica and south of the Honduras. It lies on the narrow stretch of land that connects North and South America.
Nicaragua was originally inhabited by Indians but was later conquered by the Spanish and British. Nicaragua declared independence from Spain in 1821, joining other Central American nations to form the United Provinces of Central America. This union eventually fell apart, and the country became an independent nation in 1838. Today, Nicaragua still has some financial struggles, despite its debt having been forgiven by the World Band in 2004, yet the beautiful country still holds optimistic people.
