In 1787, New Jersey was the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. The state was home to an estimated 8.8 million people as of 2013, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Despite being the fourth-smallest state in land area, New Jersey has the 11th-highest population among the states. Trenton is the capital of New Jersey, and Newark is the largest city, as of 2014.
