Parris Island was a Census Designated Place until Oct. 11, 2002, when Port Royal, South Carolina, annexed the area. Parris Island is located in Beaufort County and is home to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Marines have been stationed on the island since 1891. The base expanded in 1929 when a new causeway and bridge allowed people to access the island by car. During World War II, more than 200,000 Marines received training at Parris Island.
