The national game of India is field hockey. Field hockey is played on turf and features two teams of eleven that use curved sticks to drive a ball into the opposition's goal.
Field hockey has been played in India for a very long time, and India is the most successful country at the Olympics, having won the gold medal on eight occasions. In fact from 1928 to 1956 the hockey competition at the Olympics was won by India on every occasion. This period is considered the golden era of field hockey in India. In recent times, cricket has become more popular in India, however, field hockey is still the national game.
