The national animal of Portugal is the Iberian wolf. The country has a national bird as well, which is the Barcelos cock.
The Iberian wolf is becoming increasingly endangered as humans expand and take up the land they need to survive. Portugal has a home for wolves that have been displaced or cannot live in the wild anymore called the Iberian Wolf Recovery Center. Visitors can come to the facility and view the wolves from special observation towers. The center's goal is to provide care for the wolves, educate the public about their true nature and conduct scientific studies of the remaining wild wolves with the help of volunteers.
