The Mystic Marinelife Aquarium was established on Oct. 6, 1973, as a living laboratory and public exhibit. Its exhibits includes beluga whales, Stellar sea lions and African penguins. The Ocean Exploration Center was founded in 1997 by Dr. Robert Ballard, explorer, oceanographer and founder of the JASON Project. It includes models, maps and diagrams of Dr. Ballard's explorations of the Black Sea and the wreck of the Titanic. The Mystic Aquarium's mission is to encourage people to protect the ocean through conservation, research and education.

The aquarium is also a member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums and the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.
