There are several mountains to the east and west of the Mississippi River in the United States. The two main mountain ranges are the Appalachian Mountains to the east and the Rocky Mountains to the west, both ranges are subdivided into smaller ranges.
The Appalachians consist of six main ranges that extend from Alabama through New England into Canada. The highest point in the Appalachian Mountain range is in North Carolina at 6, 684 feet tall. The Rockies are comprised of 35 major ranges that are about 3,000 miles long. The Rocky Mountain ranges extends from New Mexico to Canada. The highest recorded point in the Rockies is in Leadville, Colorado; the peak is 14,494 feet tall.
