Missouri rests in the Midwestern region of the United States. Missouri is bordered by Iowa to the north, Illinois to the east, Kentucky and Tennessee to the southeast, Arkansas to the south and Oklahoma and Kansas to the west.
Missouri was the 24th state admitted to the Union, reaching statehood on Aug. 10, 1821. The central Missouri town of Jefferson City serves as the state capital though western border city Kansas City is the largest. In regard to area, Missouri is the 21st-largest state. Nicknamed the "Show Me State," the Mississippi River runs along the entire eastern border of Missouri.
